Teacher’s Day

Teaching and learning are inseparable. Though teachers and the teaching profession deserve respect, to my mind studentship has not received enough attention (the Student Day notwithstanding).

Even a teacher is actually a student. He is learning everyday how to teach better. His skills plateau the day this journey stop. In other words a teacher can be a better teacher if he has a student mind-set. A good doctor is also a good student. Likewise a programmer, et al.

Among the various possible teachers in our life – the most valuable is usually not even mentioned – Life. Life teaches the most valuable lessons and in a way that we can never forget. Isn’t that the definition of a great teacher?

When we think about learning, we often think about information gathering. I think the most important learning is habit formation. Who is a great teacher…the one who taught us algebra or the one who made us hard-working?
As I review the various important people in my life and their impact on me – the one person who stands out is my father. He taught me how to love people. Even loving thy enemy. How to be self-less and caring. Being honest.

I confess that I have not been among his best students but I keep learning from him despite his absence. His last few years were painful. But he was always smiling. Even in parting he managed to impart the best possible learning to me and others around him – don’t take life too seriously.

I can only recite and dedicate an old song (and also one his favorites).

Rasm-e-ulfat sikha gaya koi,
dil ki duniya basa gaya koi…
Ta qayamat na bujhe,
Aag aisi laga gaya koi…
Dil ki duniya udaas si kyu hai,
Kya yahan se chala gaya koi…
Waqt-e-rukhsat gale laga kar,
Hanste hanste rula gaya koi…

Someone taught me the true meaning of love, and how to live a contended life…
Ignited in me an unquenchable striving for progress…
But, the emptiness will never be filled… Smile – don’t take life too seriously…
