A thing of beauty is a joy forever…

I am not sure if my blogs have had any effect on my audience, but it has had a huge impact on me – mostly positive. Writing for a discerning audience requires clarity of thought which is a good stretching exercise for me. Many a nascent idea became full-blown thanks to writing about it. And many knotty concepts straightened out.

However one of the reasons for blogging was to find an answer to the question “does God exist”. Though I have become a firm theist since the past few years, many mysteries about Him are still mysteries.

A question which often bothers me is that if He exists, what does He want from us? What can we do to please Him? I tried to answer this by analyzing what He rewards.

I realized that the only attribute He has consistently rewarded is Beauty in all its forms.

It is not just about physical beauty, even beauty enshrined in a poem, music, art, idea, philosophy has invariably been rewarded by making the creator famous.

My definition of beauty is simple – something that pleases human senses. Beauty must please but not just one man or woman. Paraphrasing Immanuel Kant’s definition of Ethics:

Any creation which is pleasing independent of the Creator and the Beholder…

Taj Mahal is beautiful, Micheal Jackson’s songs are beautiful, Einstein’s theories are beautiful, Charles Dickens and J K Rowling created beauties…

A somersault soccer goal will make the player famous for life because it is so beautiful…so very beautiful that it will be watched and re-watched millions of times.

In fact I cannot recall anything which we consider successful and emulatable, but is not pleasing to the senses.

When we goto the gym and chisel our body into shape, making it beautiful, don’t we get rewarded with a better love life? Not to say that physical beauty is the only manifestation of beauty, there are many forms of beauty and one of them is undeniably physical. As I have mentioned in my earlier blog, beauty is not skin deep, but beautiful skin, is well, beautiful…

All of Steve Jobs’ creations are beautiful…and they have not gone unrewarded.

Progress is beautiful and stagnation is ugly. Progress and progressive people are always rewarded…

Pleasing emotions are beautiful…negative emotions are ugly…what gets rewarded?

Anything excellent is beautiful, excellence makes us successful…

There is another very interesting fact which can draw us to the connection between God and Beauty. Everything created by God is beautiful – sky, sun, sea, mountains, forests…there is beauty in sun set and sun rise, Nature left to itself is so beautiful…whenever we create anything beautiful we add to His creations…for which He rewards us…

Create something beautiful and you will be rewarded…I will love to hear arguments against this logic…
